Bai Tu Long Bay or Ha Long Bay? Where the Cruises Really Sail

Bai Tu Long cruises sail the quiet eastern side of the Ha Long Bay World Heritage area, not the official bay off Van Don. Crowds, the night, who picks which.

Updated October 2026

The karst is the same and the crowds are not. What cruise lines sell as Bái Tử Long Bay is the Cong Do area, about 25 km east of the Ha Long International Cruise Port at Bai Chay: the quieter eastern side of the Ha Long Bay World Heritage area, run by the bay’s management board as Ha Long Bay route 4. Thien Canh Son, the busiest cave on that route, counted about 74,000 visits in 2024. Sung Sot, the Surprise cave in the central bay, counted 1.85 million.

Quieter, not empty: Thien Canh Son, the busiest cave on this route, counted about 74,000 visits in 2024, against 1.85 million at Sung Sot in the central bay.

Pick Bai Tu Long for quiet water and a kayak, and the central bay for the famous caves. On the quiet side, start with DGB Travel & Event Company’s two-day cruise: Cap La by kayak, a night at anchor, then Thien Canh Son and the Hon Co beach. It’s from $145 on the booking platform when we checked, rated 4.7 from 1,638 reviews, the most of any cruise here. Drinks are extra.

Where the cruises actually go

Schematic infographic of Bai Tu Long cruise routes: by road from Hanoi to the Bai Chay cruise port in Ha Long, then about 25 km east by boat to the Cong Do area, with the busy central bay and the official Bai Tu Long Bay off Van Don marked separately
What cruise lines call Bai Tu Long is the Cong Do area on Ha Long Bay's quieter eastern side. The official bay and the national park lie further east, off Van Don.

Officially, Bai Tu Long Bay lies further east: Quang Ninh’s government defines it as the sea off Cam Pha and around the Van Don special zone, where Bai Tu Long National Park, founded in 2001, also lies. These cruises don’t enter the park, and none sails from Ao Tien, the Van Don port where the official Bai Tu Long routes start.

They sail route 4, which the province’s 2024 route decision counts as Ha Long Bay. VNAT, Vietnam’s tourism authority, places Cong Do in Bai Tu Long Bay. Both labels are in use, so the cruise lines didn’t invent theirs.

Ten of the eleven cruises here name route 4 stops; Halong Bay Renea Cruise’s listing names none, so ask its seller. Expect few famous names and plenty of water: a climb up stone steps to Thien Canh Son and kayaking around Cap La, and on some cruises Vung Vieng, a preserved fishing village where a few dozen families still farm fish and row visitors around.

Is Bai Tu Long Bay a UNESCO site?

The part these cruises visit is. Ha Long Bay was inscribed in 1994, and in 2023 the listing became Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago, adding Cat Ba and Lan Ha. VNAT places Cong Do island inside the World Heritage area.

Most of the official Bai Tu Long Bay isn’t: the IUCN’s 2000 evaluation called its islands a buffer zone. So the cruises sail inside the Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba World Heritage area, on its quieter eastern side, and calling all of Bai Tu Long Bay a UNESCO site stretches it.

How much quieter it is

The board’s counts, as reported by Lao Động: Thien Canh Son had nearly 55,000 visits in 2023 and more than 74,000 in 2024. Sung Sot had 1.56 million and 1.85 million, Thien Cung grotto 670,000 and 710,000. Routes 3 and 4 carry mainly overnight guests, the board says, and a March 2026 day-cruiser counted “only two other boats in the bay”.

Quieter isn’t empty. Typhoon Yagi left waste across the bay in 2024, and a March 2026 reviewer complained about litter on a beach. Read “untouched” in a listing title as marketing.

A night at Cong Do

Overnight boats can’t anchor wherever they like. Route 4’s official overnight area is Cong Do, a limestone island ringed by winding sea lagoons and coral, and you share it with other cruise boats, so expect their lights across the water. The rules cap one night at 24 hours from departure, which makes a “two-day” cruise about 22 to 23 hours aboard.

The morning makes up for it. Overnight boats reach Thien Canh Son at about eight, day boats at about two, and one DGB group that went in first found it “not crowded”.

Lan Ha Bay and other alternatives

Lan Ha Bay, off Cat Ba island in Hai Phong, joined the World Heritage listing in 2023. It’s the same drowned tower karst, and no source we found ranks one bay above another for looks. Boats go from Cat Ba, or from Tuan Chau. None of the cruises here goes there, or into the official Bai Tu Long Bay, which got its first overnight anchorage only in May 2026.

On land, Trang An in Ninh Binh has been a World Heritage site since 2014, and one three-day trip on this site pairs it with a night on route 4.

When the central bay is the better pick

Choose the central routes if Sung Sot, the bay’s most-visited cave, and the Ti Top viewpoint are why you’re going, or if you want a licensed beach: in 2023 Ti Top’s was the only one in the bay. Their stops are closer to port too, which counts on a day trip, since the sail to Cong Do takes 1.5 to 2 hours each way. For that classic route, halongbaycruisehanoi.com covers the day cruises from Hanoi to Sung Sot cave and Ti Top.

For quiet water and kayaking among the karsts, choose the eastern side, and give it the night.
