Is a Bai Tu Long Bay Cruise Worth It? Time, Money and Who It Suits

Yes, if you want Ha Long's karst seascape with far fewer people. What a 'two-day' cruise really gives you, what the money buys, and who should skip it.

Updated October 2026

For most visitors, yes. More than 3.4 million people visited Ha Long Bay in 2025, and VNAT, Vietnam’s tourism authority, calls 24 hours on the water “still the quintessential Vietnam experience”. The cruises sold as Bái Tử Long sail the quieter eastern side of the same World Heritage area, with far fewer visitors: about 74,000 at Thien Canh Son in 2024, against 1.85 million at Sung Sot in the central bay. Book a night aboard, because the sail out is long, and in storm season leave yourself a spare day.

Vung Vieng is a preserved fishing village. Its families moved ashore from 2014, and a few dozen still farm fish there and row visitors around.

The cruise with the most reviews behind it is DGB Travel & Event Company’s two-day trip, from $145 on the booking platform when we checked and rated 4.7 from 1,638 reviews. It kayaks at Cap La on the first afternoon and visits Thien Canh Son and the Hon Co beach next morning. “Recommend this tour that also visits the quieter areas,” one reviewer wrote in May 2026.

The real hours aboard

A “two-day” cruise is about 22 to 23 hours aboard, since the rules cap one night at 24 hours from departure. On DGB’s cruise you check in at about 12:50, eat lunch on the way out, kayak at Cap La at 15:00 and watch the sunset from the deck. You spend the night at Cong Do, one of the bay’s official overnight anchorages, with other cruise boats. Next morning brings Tai Chi at 6:00, the cave and the beach at 8:00, a cooking demonstration of fresh spring rolls and an early lunch, and you’re ashore by 11:20. Add 3.5 to 4 hours by road each way from Hanoi.

“This trip doesn’t last two days; unfortunately, it doesn’t even last 24 hours,” a guest on another boat wrote in April 2026. If that feels short, the three-day guide covers the second night.

What the money buys

DGB’s $145 buys an ocean-view cabin, four meals, an English-speaking guide, kayaking, the cooking demonstration and the bay fee, which on route 4 with one night is 500,000 dong a person (October 2026). It doesn’t cover alcohol or soft drinks, a single cabin ($60 extra), holiday surcharges or the $10 peak-season surcharge from 1 October to 30 April. The listing offers a 7:40 shuttle from the Old Quarter as a booking option.

Across the site, day cruises start at $72, one night costs $125 to $169 and two nights $312 to $316. On DGB’s own pair, the second night adds $171 to the from-price ($145 against $316), and buys a full day on a day boat to Vung Vieng and three more meals.

For a first visit, one night is the right length: an afternoon in a kayak, and the cave first thing next morning, hours before the day boats.

Bai Tu Long or the central bay?

The eastern side gives you far fewer visitors at the stops, kayaking among the karsts, a preserved fishing village and, by reviewers’ accounts, few other boats around. It costs you a longer sail, 1.5 to 2 hours each way from port, which squeezes a day trip. It also costs you the big-name show caves, Sung Sot and Thien Cung, and a sure swim, because a swim stop happens only when the season, the weather and the rules allow. And you share the Cong Do anchorage with other cruise boats. If quiet water matters more to you than famous caves, it’s worth it.

Who should skip it

Anyone going for the famous caves. Sung Sot and Thien Cung are on the central routes, and Bai Tu Long Bay vs Ha Long Bay explains where those cruises go.

Solo travellers counting every dollar. Single supplements on the overnight cruises run from $60 to $170, while none of the three day cruises lists one, so a day cruise is the cheaper way in.

Travellers with limited mobility. Thien Canh Son is a climb up stone steps and some boats board by tender; three listings rule out wheelchair users or people with mobility impairments. Ask the seller before you book.

Anyone who wants long, clear views between December and March, when the mist comes in. The best time to visit covers the better months.

Day cruises from $72 to $90, one night from $125 to $169, two nights from $265 to $316 per person. Drinks, transfers and the October-to-April surcharge often come on top. Prices checked in October 2026 and subject to change.

Go for it if you want the bay without the crowds and can spare a night. Short of time, take a day cruise; for more kayaking and a slower pace, take two nights.
