Before you book

Be at the Ha Long International Cruise Port (listed as Sun World Port) at Bai Chay by 11:15-11:30. The 7:40 Old Quarter shuttle comes with the 'Option from Hanoi'; a Ninh Binh pick-up costs extra.
Not included: soft and alcoholic drinks, a single-cabin surcharge from US$60 (paid at check-in) and holiday surcharges. From 1 October to 30 April a peak charge from US$10 a person is paid on the day.
You board at about 12:50 and land at about 11:20 next day: about 22-23 hours aboard. A swim at Cap La or the Hon Co beach depends on the season, the weather and the rules.
Bring a passport or ID card, as the listing asks. Overnight boats register foreign guests, as hotels do, so have passport details ready when you book.
Storms can close the bay at short notice, mostly June to September. Free cancellation ends 24 hours before departure, so ask the seller before you book whether a closure gets you a new date or a refund.
