Before you book

Most guests are on the 2-day cruise, so on day 2 you move to a day boat with another group for Vung Vieng, kayaking and, weather allowing, Thay cave, then rejoin the main boat for the night.
Board at the Ha Long International Cruise Port (listed as Sunworld Port) at 11:30. The shuttle from a Hanoi Old Quarter hotel (7:30-8:00 pick-up) costs US$20 a person.
Not included: drinks, insurance, a US$150 single supplement and Christmas, New Year and national-holiday surcharges. From 1 October to 30 April peak season adds US$20 a person.
Bring a passport or ID card and some cash, as the listing asks; overnight boats register foreign guests, as hotels do. Swims depend on the season, the weather and the rules on the day.
Storms can close the bay at short notice, mostly June to September. Free cancellation ends 24 hours before departure, so ask the seller before you book whether a closure gets you a new date or a refund.
